It's The Process, Stupid!
Back in 1992, Bill Clinton was running for President. The insight unlocking his then faltering campaign was simple: “it’s the economy, stupid!” - who knew! How people feel about prospects, safety and opportunity informs their behaviour. A lesson for today too, perhaps.
Anyway, not why I’m writing. I’m interested more in the phrase. And less about economy, more about process.
Lots of people in my orbit are feeling the drift. Maybe in their day-to-day. Maybe in the companies they run. Blown along without agency or impact.
Whether your drift is of the running to stand still variety, or you're simply stuck standing still, worry less about the thing you think you need - more money or meaning or much else between - and think process instead.
It's the process, stupid!
LeanMind is a growing collection of leaders and pioneers stopping drift and reclaiming agency, clarity, simplicity, joy AND IMPACT(!).
Follow my writing and you'll have heard me talk about the philosophers of our times. Yep, football managers (that's soccerball, if you're currently stateside - although I can't talk for their philosopher-ability).
“Don't get too excited by the ups or downs with the lows”, they say. Spoken like a true Marcus Aurelius.
“It's about the process”, they also say. Spoken like a true LeanMind-er.
The needs of the LeanMind leaders vary: from money to meaning.
Whether you're chasing the money or your tail, it matters not.
It's the process, stupid.
The other week I was chatting to Tom Morgan, convener of a LeanMind adjacent community, The Leading Edge: home to financiers, Wall Street types and others ‘waking up’ (my words not his).
In talking, he shared a phrase : divine flow.
What Is Your Divine Flow?
Each day, I try to do three things.
I introduce people to each other.
I work on creating something new.
I enjoy deep chat, 121.
We might call these my guiding principles (together with truth, faith, resolve, clarity, simplicity, heart), abbreviated to
Commune
Create
Connect
Commune
Bringing people together, introducing them to like minded others (because value is always found on these connections, even if it reveals over time) is important to me.
Create
My energy is always looking to create - be it articles, products, services or entire businesses. Writing this is a creation, as is birthing a new network. This an energy flow which needs honoring and channeling to the usefulness of others.
Connect
Dive deep, spend time in 121 chat.
Weave these three threads into my day, everyday and a few things happen.
I am energized.
I create value for others.
My curiosity is piqued.
My short term attention span is engaged.
Money flows.
You might call this my divine flow; the conditions when I'm most in flow, harnessing my gifts, tapping into my motivations and oriented to usefulness for others. LeanMind is a product of my divine flow.
It’s important to know yours.
Whether your need is more money or more meaning, the answer is found here. Let your guiding principles guide you. And let the outcomes take care of themselves.
It's the process, stupid.
What are your guiding principles? When are you in divine flow?
Know this and money and meaning and much else besides will take care of itself...
So, what are yours
